What is Winter Melon?

It is also known as ash gourd, white gourd, winter gourd, tallow gourd and Chinese preserving melon.Winter melon is also a common name for members of the cultivar group(Gp) of the muskmelon, also known as casaba or honeydew melons.Although the fruit is referred to as a “melon,” the fully grown crop is not sweet. It has yellow flowers and broad leaves.

It is widely grown throughout South Asia and Asia, Java, and Japan.The fruit is fuzzy when young. The immature melon has thick white flesh which tastes sweet when eaten.By maturity, the fruit loses its hairs and develops a waxy coating (wax gourd) and providing a long shelf life.The melon may grow up to 80 cm in length.

Use in Cooking:

It is mainly used in smoothies, cocktails, soups, salads, braised dishes. In northern parts of India, it is used to prepare a candy called Petha. In South Indian cuisine, it is useful to make a variety of curries. Juice of winter melon is used as a remedy to treat some diseases by the Mizo community of north-east India. In Chinese cuisine, the melons are used in stir fry to make winter melon soup.
